The single needle lockstitch machine is particularly suited to the basting and       tacking or repairing of any work - thin fabric to thick heavy - such as quilts,         mattress panels, awnings, boat covers, tents, parachutes etc.

For convenient tacking, presser foot motion (hopping foot) is unified with the     action of the needle bar, descending only during the tacking operation itself. 

At other times the foot is up, allowing movement of work position

for the next tack.
